Float: To rest or remain suspended on the surface of a liquid without sinking; to move or be suspended freely.

Floating seems simple.

It looks effortless.

But for some of us—it’s frustratingly elusive.

I’ve always loved water. I’m a swimmer. A strong one. I’ve swum countless laps with endurance and speed, but ask me to float? Really float—on my back, still, relaxed—and my body fights it. My legs pull me downward. My core engages too much. I begin to sink, no matter how much I try to “just relax.”

But that changed a year ago, in waters different than I’d ever known.

Waters closer to the equator.

Waters infused with salt.

And for the first time—I floated.

No effort. No strain. No sinking.

Just peace. Stillness. Suspension.

And this morning, as the Holy Spirit often does, He took me back there.

Not to the location—but to the lesson.

And He whispered:

“To float, you need salt water. You can’t float in just any kind of water.”

That hit me like a wave.

Saltwater + Buoyancy = Divine Design

In the natural, floating is governed by principles of buoyancy and density. Water that contains salt is denser than freshwater, and because of that density, your body—which contains less density than saltwater—will float with much greater ease. It’s why the Dead Sea is famous for its “effortless floating.” The salinity lifts you.

But here’s the key:

You still have to relax.

If you fight it, strain, or panic—you’ll disturb the very physics meant to support you.

Now look at this spiritually.

Salt has always been significant in Scripture. Yeshua said:

“You are the salt of the earth…” (Matthew 5:13)

Salt preserves. Salt purifies. Salt holds weight. And salt changes water.

It transforms the atmosphere.

When we float in freshwater—it represents our own strength, control, striving.

But floating in saltwatercovenant water, purified water, set-apart water—means we are held by the very presence and promises of God.

The Struggle to Float Is the Struggle to Trust

Here’s the spiritual paradox:

The ability to float is not a matter of effort—but of surrender.

You must trust the water to hold you.

How many times has God whispered, “Be still”?

How often has He said, “I will sustain you, uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10)?

But we flail. We sink. We tighten our core and try to stay afloat in our own ability.

We forget that He is the salt. He is the buoyant force. The denser the Word in your soul—the more your spirit can rest in Him.

The Science of Floating, the Spirit of Faith

Buoyancy happens when the force pushing you up is greater than the force pulling you down.

What’s pulling you down?

• Fear

• Shame

• Guilt

• Self-effort

• Control

What lifts you?

• His Presence

• His Word

• His Covenant

• His Spirit

• His salt

Yeshua didn’t come to help us swim harder.

He came so we could float in His finished work.

Floating: The Posture of Rest

There’s a moment in every believer’s journey when God says:

“Stop kicking. Just float.”

It’s not a passive surrender.

It’s an active trust.

It’s the stillness of Psalm 46:10:

“Be still and know that I am God.”

It’s the posture of a child in a loving Father’s arms, suspended—not by her own power—but by His.

Declarations

  • I am held up by God’s promises, not my performance

  • I float in the saltwater of His covenant, carried by grace

  • I surrender the need to strive, and I rest in His sustaining strength

  • My life is governed by His Spirit, not my effort

  • I am learning to live in the rhythm of divine buoyancy—where trust holds me afloat

Prayer

Father,

Teach me to float again.

Not in water of my own making, but in the salt-rich, Spirit-saturated waters of Your covenant.

Forgive me for trying to carry myself, for thinking my strength is what saves me.

I surrender the need to control. I release the impulse to strive.

Show me what it means to be held—completely, confidently, and quietly—by You.

Make my soul light again. Let the heaviness fall off as I learn to rest.

Infuse me with trust. Drench me in grace.

And may the depths I once feared become the place I float with You.

In the name of Yeshua,

Amen.

Final Thought: The Water Knows How to Hold You

God never asked you to be the water.

He never asked you to figure out the formula.

He just said:

“Come to Me…and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

So today, trust the buoyancy of His presence.

Trust the salt of His Word.

Lay back in surrender and let Him do what only He can.

You were never meant to sink in this season.

You were made to float.
